Everything you need to know about Canada

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Canada?

Canada experiences two distinct seasons, and you must embrace this North American rhythm to truly understand it. From June to September, daylight stretches late into the evening, trails in Mauricie or Banff parks are perfectly accessible, and whales migrate up the St. Lawrence Estuary through October. Indian summer, in late September in the Laurentians or Gaspésie, remains one of the finest windows for a circuit. Winter truly begins in January: snowmobiling in Saguenay, dog sledding in the Yukon, northern lights near Yellowknife. May and November should be avoided, caught between thawing and first snowfalls. To travel to Canada with peace of mind, it's better to plan your trip around the experience you're seeking rather than specific dates.

How much budget do you need for a trip to Canada?

Canada is not a budget-friendly destination, let's be clear about that from the start. For a two-week trip with quality accommodations, car rental, some flagship activities (bear watching, whale-watching cruises, bush flights) and dining, expect to budget between €4,000 and €6,000 per person, including international flights. Quebec remains more accessible than the Rocky Mountains, where Banff and Jasper push prices higher, especially in July-August. In winter, stays at outfitter lodges or getaways to the Far North quickly add up, but they typically include all activities. Tipping (15 to 20%) and provincial taxes are systematically added to displayed prices: a detail worth factoring into your budget to avoid surprises once you arrive.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Canada?

Canada may seem straightforward to organize: French is spoken in Quebec, roads are excellent, English works elsewhere. Yet this is precisely what leads many travelers to overlook regions worth exploring. Our team has been based in Montreal for over twenty years, spending each summer exploring the Maritimes, the Rockies, and the North Shore, and winters testing outfitters and lodges across the Far North. Working with an English-speaking local agency means getting an honest assessment of distances (the country is vast, it's easy to forget), accommodations booked directly with partners we know by name, and a contact you can reach from Canada if anything unexpected happens. It also saves you time building a coherent itinerary.

What to see on a Canada tour?

It all depends on your entry point. On the east side, a classic route connects Montreal, Quebec City, and Tadoussac for whale watching, then heads toward the Gaspésie region and Percé Rock, with a possible excursion to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. On the west side, the Calgary-Banff-Jasper-Vancouver corridor concentrates the country's most photographed mountain landscapes, complemented by Vancouver Island and its wild coastline. Yukon and the Northwest Territories appeal to those seeking something different: northern lights, indigenous communities, and the Dempster Highway. Add to this unique experiences like a stay in Innu territory, a Bonaventure River descent, or a few nights in an isolated cabin. Three weeks allows you to properly explore a region; two weeks is rarely enough.

Everything you need to know before you go

For tourist stays, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) must be obtained online before departure (approximately 7 CAD, valid for 5 years). The eTA is nearly instantaneous. A valid passport for the duration of your stay is required. Before booking your trip, please check the requirements applicable to your nationality with the consular authorities of your destination.

For a bespoke quality trip, expect between 230 and 370 euros per day per person, including accommodation, meals, internal transport and activities. International flights (500-900 euros return) are additional. Distances and car rentals represent a significant budget.
